(Warning…..LA is about to start talking about her childhood, so kick back and relax. This might be a little long winded.)
Here he coo-ooo-oomes, that’s Kathy’s Klown. When I was a little girl, I thought they were singing that song about my mom (her name is Kathy). Actually, the song is Cathy’s Clown, but my mom spells her name with a “K” and I wanted to name this kit after her. Anyway, my dad and his friends got together quite frequently to play music…even recorded music on my dad’s reel to reel. So, I sometimes didn’t know which music on the stereo was by people we knew and which music was by people we didn’t. To me, it was entirely possible that the Everly Brothers hung out at my house and knew my mom and dad. Of course they could be singing about her! I also thought that John Lennon worked at the record store at the mall. In retrospect, the guy looked more like Mick Fleetwood, but I really didn’t know who Mick Fleetwood was when I was 4, so to me, it must have been John Lennon. I don’t know how old I was when I figured out that dude wasn’t John Lennon, but the same guy still worked in that store when I was in high school. Still looked like John Lennon/Mick Fleetwood, too.
Anyway, this kit might seem a little random, so I feel like I should explain myself. :) We were given pictures to inspire a kit at the Brownie Scraps designer challenge. Here was the photo I used:
Those pillows look so much like the curtains that were in my nursery (I’ve only seen them in pictures)! I think there were pillows like that, too…not sure, though. Soooo, I decided to make my kit based on my childhood. Before I go any further….I also found a picture of the furniture that we had. I googled “70s JC Penny furniture”. We had the entire line of this lovely decor:
Yep…we had the table and chairs, couch and coffee table, a chair and ottoman set…we even had the bar and barstools! ROFLOL!!! While I’m at it, I happen to have a photo of me and my dad sitting on some of said furniture:
That’s Paul and Lori, circa 1975…check out my dad’s pants!!! LOL!!
So, this gives you an idea of what I lived with as a small child in the 70s. I saw this furniture every day of my life until I was about 12 or 13. We had wagon wheel chandeliers, too. Yeah we did. So, my kit has a wagon wheel. My mom collected owls and they were everywhere….had to have an owl in the kit. I had a Raggedy Ann doll, so I drew one up for the kit. LOL! And I put a tree in because I loved climbing trees!! (Now, I’m terrified of heights….what’s up with that?!) Also, as I mentioned my dad was ALWAYS playing music. Usually the guitar, but sometimes he played the banjo. I think by the time I was 5, I knew every Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard song there was, but I had never heard them performed by Johnny or Merle….only my dad and his friends. LOL! Oh! There’s some word art in there, too. I think those 70s children out there will remember some of the sayings.
I could go on and on, but I know you’re ready to get to the freebie. I chose today as the release date because my mom’s birthday was Saturday. :) I did the desktop challenge at STS using this kit and an old photo of me and my mom…check it out:
The calendar is by Eva Marina. :) Look at my ears…they still look like that. Floppin’ in the breeze. I try to keep them covered up whenever possible! And look how sweet my mom looks. I love her to death, but sweet? Not so much. ;)
Now, down to the kit. I’ll be giving you the papers today and embellies tomorrow and alpha Wednesday. This week, I’ve got an add-on too! (I just had to do a little more). I’ll be giving you the add-on Thursday. Not only that, but my CT has a couple of QPs for you and maybe a little surprise, too. You’ll have to check back, though. :)
Let me show you a few layouts my CT has done. It was so much fun to see how they used this kit!! Here are just a few layouts to start:

ReplyDeleteROFL!! That is tooooooo funny! I don't know that I have ever seen the barrel furniture, but I know all about the wagon wheel furniture...we had it in our apt in college--I think it was some great sale on them because every apt had them! lol
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great kit with lots of fun memories!
I am so inspired. I absolutely must make an 80's kit! I LOVE LOVE LOVE your 70's kit. You didn't mention, but I bet you had the velvet wall paper with the red and the white, and it looks like faces? I'm not sure if it was faces or that's just what it looked like to me. That would make some freaky scrappin paper! Anybody know what I mean? That furniture was obviously pretty high end based on the price in the ad, tho! My aunt has all kinds of owls, too, which she collected in 60's/70's. String art owls, macrame owls (I know if you collected owls, you had the requisite macrame owl!). What fun, reading your post and the kit, too. Thanks for sharing!
